They say music is a universal language — but when it’s done right, it becomes something even more powerful: a universal connection.
What started as something we had only heard about — an interactive, sensory-friendly, and fully inclusive concert experience called Especially Everyone — quickly became one of the most meaningful partnerships in Breakthrough’s mission to spread inclusion and normalize different life experiences.
When we first crossed paths with Pete, the founder of Especially Everyone, we instantly knew we were tuned to the same frequency. His concerts had been lighting up places like Garcia’s at The Capitol Theatre and local community centers with full-scale, high-energy performances designed to make everyone feel seen, heard, and part of the music.
Then came the event at the Shames JCC in Tarrytown, where sponsorship opportunities were available. Our CEO, Jake, didn’t even have to think twice — Breakthrough had to be involved. The event was a massive hit, and that day sparked what we now call an instant bromance between Jake and Pete, built on a shared passion for breaking barriers and rewriting what inclusion looks like.
Pete’s philosophy mirrored ours perfectly:
Too often, music for the neurodiverse population is watered down — simplified to fit a perception of limitation. But Pete knows, just as we do, that people are people. Neurodiverse or neurotypical, we all crave rhythm, connection, and freedom of expression. We all want to sing, dance, rock out, rap, jam, and experience life to the fullest.
That’s exactly what Breakthrough stands for.
Just like our gym — it looks like any other gym. The difference? We welcome everyone and adapt to meet each person’s needs. It’s not about changing the experience — it’s about making sure everyone can access it.
Music does the same thing. It transcends words, labels, and expectations. It unites us. It reminds us that inclusion isn’t about lowering the volume — it’s about turning it up for everyone to be heard.
Pete and his team have created something special — from leading music programs in group homes, schools, and community centers to running the full-scale Especially Everyone concert experience, complete with sensory lounges, break areas, and interactive opportunities for all.
Even cooler, Pete’s crew now hosts recurring Open Mic nights in bars across the county — giving anyone and everyone the chance to share their voice. The moments that come out of those nights are nothing short of life-changing.
Imagine a 23-year-old with autism, non-verbal in everyday life, stepping up to the mic — and suddenly belting out Queen better than any contestant on American Idol. That’s the magic of music. That’s the power of inclusion.
And that’s why we’re so proud to keep collaborating with Especially Everyone — because together, we’re not just playing music.
We’re changing the way the world listens.
